January is the traditional month for looking forward and looking back. Like many readers, I have been doing a bit of both. But I have decided forward is more fun. For The Eclectic Lapidary, that means expanding our vision from the internet to the older
world of publishing on paper.
The Eclectic Lapidary print magazine will be monthly also, and the content will be similar but not identical to the online ezine. Initially, we will have limited color in the print edition due to the expense of color production. There will be advertising
for both online and offline businesses. Comments and questions will be welcomed from all our readers. Look for more details soon!
With all the excitement over the expansion of The Eclectic Lapidary, I was feeling some regret over all the things I ran out of time to do in 1997. Vince King reminded me,
"It is the vision of the not yet accomplished, the fruition of ideas that are tomorrow's guide. It is the light of the gem that we wish to touch, but only with our eyes, and minds, for the realization that coming to the end of the journey, would
also end our dream. We must leave those 100 stones to tempt us to continue on, to meet those friends, and build upon the vision. Each of us, heading in opposite directions, to the same goal, so that as the heart of stones begins to dim, we can embrace
those we did meet, and say "Look, look at what we did. We made a difference, made it better." Our successes won't be measured within this lifetime, but within the lifetimes of those who will follow. May we all have the fortune and fortitude to do those
things that will help tomorrow's dreamers."
Says it all, doesn't it? (Thank you, Vince for the reminder!) And the proof can be found in the article written by Katherine Noble, daughter of Jan, The Steel Magnolia, herself. Mother to daughter, generation to generation, the vision moves along.
May you each find new friends, and new visions in 1998 and delight in those that are already yours. And cut a few of those stones from last year to make room for new ones.
A happy, healthy New Year to you all!
